For first year college students, transitioning from high school to college can be as daunting as it is thrilling. This is especially true when it comes to writing. After years spent studying a “college prep” curriculum designed to equip them to take on the challenges of university-level writing and research, many students still have little idea of what to expect and what will be expected of them.
In the Composition Program at California State University Channel Islands, our primary focus is guiding first year students as they navigate a territory they have yet to explore — college writing and research — after having left the familiar terrain of high school English. The theme of this online text — Shore to Shore — signifies this journey.
The Composition Faculty at CI is committed to supporting first year students in developing the tools, strategies, and habits of effective college writers and researchers. More significantly, we are dedicated to helping each student harness the power of expression to cultivate his or or own unique voice.
We have a challenging voyage ahead. Let’s set sail.
